They weren’t the best looks on the 2017 Golden Globes red carpet, but these were good.
Kathryn Hahn in Brandon Maxwell.
She is utterly fabulous, and on a regular suit-free year this would be an unequivocal win. This year, however, there was another suit that beat this hands down, so we can be nit-picky about this and say the sleeves, the jacket and the trousers are all a smidge too long (if you’re gonna go tailoring it has to be TAILORED), and while the suit is a great look and her hair is… I want that hair!… the bra top, it has to be said, is unfortunate. I say this purely in comparison to Evan Rachel Wood, who took this category, killed it with her bare hands, stuffed it and mounted it on her wall.
Rachel Bloom in the neckline Jessica Chastain’s dress wishes it had.
Seriously, how great is this? It’s Christian Siriano and he had SUCH a good outing at this event. Her boobs are supported, those straps are sitting exactly where they should be, and there’s such a gorgeous combination of good, solid structure here with the softness of a tulle overlay and a smattering of gold embellishment to draw the eye in at the waist. It’s pretty fab.
Milly Bobby Brown in a dress you would have died for when you were 12.
One of my favourite things about Sunday’s Golden Globes was how excited literally every celebrity was to meet the Stranger Things kids…
… and how much these kids hammed it up on the red carpet. Now that they’ve tasted this level of fame and success, I want someone to take them away, put them in bubble wrap for six years, and then send them to college to study law. I feel like Winona might be the person for the job. Anyway, I always feel gross critiquing the red carpet style of a child, but she’s in the game now and it should be noted that she’s playing it well. This Jenny Packham cocktail dress is so cute and age appropriate (it looks strapless, but it’s actually not), her little block heels are adorable, and her gelled down hair is killing me. I love it.
Gina Rodriguez in Naeem Khan.
On a different person I think I might be ambivalent to this, but wow, she looks fantastic. This dress literally lights her up. It’s from the Naeem Khan Bridal collection, which I totally didn’t peg because it doesn’t look bridal at all, and it would be brave bride who’d want to carry that weight in beading around with her for 14 hours. Gina is making this look like a breeze though. It would be so easy for a dress like this to wear you, but she’s showing it who’s boss.
Laura Dern in a lesson to Nicole Kidman.
No frills, no fuss, just a strong, simple silhouette that lets the embellishment do the talking. It’s kind of Laura Dern’s red carpet go-to, and this custom Burberry fits the brief perfectly.
Well played, ladies, well played.
